TESOL Minor Now Available to All Evangel University Students
November 28, 2011
Evangel University, a Christian university in Springfield, Missouri, has made its academic minor in TESOL available to all students, regardless of major. TESOL stands for “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.”
The TESOL minor is intended to benefit Evangel University students planning to teach, work at literacy centers, work overseas, and/or work with immigrants or refugees to the United States.
Previously, the TESOL minor, originally adopted in 2008, was available solely to Education majors. Only those students with Education majors will continue to receive the necessary credentialing to serve as official TESOL instructors in a public school.
The TESOL minor should help prepare Evangel University students to excel in a career marketplace that values the ability to communicate with and understand different cultures.
Jennifer Morrison, Assistant Professor of English/TESOL at Evangel said, “Experience in TESOL is also valuable as companies look to hire business representatives with the skills necessary to work with members of other cultures. Our hope is that with this program, we will be able to accommodate all students who wish to teach English to non-native speakers, whether as a volunteer or a professional.”
