Using social media to learn about Christian colleges and universities
Social media websites like Facebook and Twitter have changed the ways in which individuals communicate with family and friends and meet new people. These online platforms have also given prospective students more ways to get to know Christian colleges and universities they may have an interest in applying to.
When individuals want to learn more about a Christian university or college, they should visit the school’s campus, as well as its website. On these online resources, prospective students will typically find one or more links to the institution’s various social media pages. If they head over to these websites, they are likely to find even more information on these colleges and universities.
While every page is different, prospective students are likely to find photos, videos and other original content that can provide them with a better sense of life on campus. Oftentimes, these pages try to engage current, former and future students with questions.
On Crown College’s official Facebook page, which has just over 600 fans, there are several questions that users of the social media website can respond to. For instance, on April 4, 2012, Crown asked what people had planned for Easter. On March 12, 2012, the Christian college asked what was the most inspiring thing people have heard during the month.
These questions are simple, but they provide a great way for the college to promote discussion between its tech-savvy students online.
Meanwhile, on Liberty University’s Facebook page, which has more than 71,850 fans, people can access information on school events and videos of on-campus events. The platform also provides the Christian university with a chance to share beautiful shots from around campus. Among the photo albums prospective students can view are “Spring Break Mission Trips,” “Jerry Falwell Library Groundbreaking” and “Pic of the Day Spring 2012.”
Beyond the opportunity to get a more intimate look at campus life, one of the biggest benefits of visiting a Christian school’s social media page is that prospective students can often connect with current students.
If an institution’s Facebook wall allows visitors to post comments, they can pose one or more of the questions they have about the school and possibly receive responses from students or staff members. Individuals can even reach out to current students or faculty via private messages.
